C^14年龄测定关键在于确定样品中的C^14比放射性。早期，气体正比计数器成功地解决了这个问题，但制样流程冗长繁杂。而液体闪烁计数法，则具试样内部含碳量高、制样流程短、操作程序简单等优点。液体闪烁计数法与气体计数法相配合可使C^14年龄测定更趋完善。
