北京市东城区东四路口往北,从今东四北大街到东直门南大街一线路东至今朝阳门北小街到东直门南小街一线路西,分别有14条东西向的胡同,称为东四头条至东四十四条。东四十条便为其中之一。这是一条具有厚重历史文化的街道,有明清两朝代京都储藏皇粮、俸米的皇家官仓一一南新仓,附近还聚有众多名人故居。地铁站内的墙壁上画有从古至今的不同体育项目,弘扬着“坚韧不拔”的体育精神,传播着传统的民族文化。
