Murine mammary tumor virus (MMTV) causes murine mammary tumors and is associated with the etiology of murine lymphoma. Recent studies on humans have found that MMTV-membrane protein DNA sequences are found in tumor tissue in 30% to 40% of breast cancer patients, whereas MMTV-membrane protein DNA sequences are found in only 4% of normal breast tissue. MMTV DNA was detected in tissues that diagnosed both early lymphoma and breast cancer.
