《乐记》不仅肯定了人类拥有的宇宙精神,而且还把宇宙精神转化为人类精神,把满足和谐社会的需要,视为乐的最高价值取向,对文艺提出了应有的更高要求,并由此出发,阐释了人与动物的区别,对禽兽的审美能力给予了直接的否定,认为“惟君子为能知乐”等,倡导礼乐文化对“口腹耳目之欲”的超越。在人类社会进化史上,人类文明的传承和创新永远体现着人类的文化化或文明化的主题,而这一主题的本质内涵,恰恰在于人性对动物性的超越。《乐记》倡导人对于动物性的超越,用礼乐文化来修身养性,“以道制欲”也就成了重要的人生乃至社会主题,以促进人类理性和感性的统一,肉体生命和精神生命的统一。
