清代乾嘉学人继承了清初以来批评宋儒“图书”易学的学术传统,但是也表现二种不同的学术取向:一是通过批评宋儒“图书”易学这一途径来完成向汉易探求的转换,同时对其“先天”、“太极”之学所显现的思想内涵也着力予以维护,其“图书”易学本身已由文献的真伪诘辨,逐渐转向阐发其思想内涵的价值,并且从哲学的角度予以重新审视“图书”易学。二是从本质上颠覆了宋儒的“图书”易学,虽然貌似回归传统的象数之学,事实上却是创拟了一种有别于宋儒“图书”易学的新“图书学”模式。
