Under potted condition, the water deficit at two critical periods during winter wheat filling stage resulted in lower grain yield than the control. In the early stage of filling, water shortage reduced the number of grains per spike; in the late stage, water shortage only reduced grain weight and had no obvious effect on the number of grains per spike. The reduction of grain number may not be due to insufficient supply of photosynthetic products, and its mechanism needs further study. The reduction of grain weight is analyzed from the aspects of carbon metabolism, mainly as a result of the decrease of photosynthetic intensity and the joint action of functional leaf premature aging. Water short-time breathing, dark breathing, photosynthetic products transport, storage of stalks transferred and other aspects of the change, no significant impact on grain weight gain.
