海明威的小说《老人与海》是我们非常熟悉的也是作者本人的得意之作。桑提亚哥即那位苍老、有经验、执着的老人,连续两个多月都没有任何收获,可他却不灰心、不放弃,在第八十五天仍然在其他渔夫的嘲笑声中坚持出海,可当他好不容易捕获到一条大马林鱼时,却要与它做激烈的斗争,大马林鱼的血腥又引来了鲨鱼,老人又与鲨鱼进行了殊死搏斗,结果大马林鱼被鲨鱼吃光了,最后,老人只是筋疲力尽地拖回一副鱼架。作品有着深刻的寓意,老人与鲨鱼搏斗暗喻人与命运的抗衡,桑提亚哥不屈的拼搏象征着人类不可摧毁的精神力量。老渔人桑提亚哥是海明威塑造的一位悲剧形象,贫穷而又倒霉的老渔夫桑提亚哥有着悲惨的命运,但他却又是一个失败的英雄,桑提亚哥虽败犹荣。
