Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is an enzyme used to repair damaged DNA, but a report in Nature Neuroscience found that the enzyme can also repair neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Genomic instability in mice with Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (aka ALS), ALS. Unlike other cells in the body, neurons in adult mammalian brains do not divide. Since repairs can not be achieved by copying existing DNA, DNA damage and resultant genomic instability are particularly troublesome to neurons. Moreover, the physical breakdown of DNA molecular chains is associated with aging and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and ALS
