测定从表土下面冲破土壤结皮所需要的垂向压力,是把直径为1.2厘米(0.5时)的园盘(形似钮扣)系到钓丝上,然后用砂和水泥的混合物(即水泥砂浆—译者注)形成的土壤结皮埋起来,用向砂内增加水泥的方法增强结皮强度,用水作砝码通过一个滑轮系统逐渐增加压力,用一个天平记录园盘顶破结皮时钓丝上的最大牵引力.水泥的增量与测定的结皮强度密切相关(r~2=0.96),所测定的结皮强度与大豆播种的出苗率也密切相关(r~2=0.98),这些关系精确地反映了结皮强度对大豆苗出土的影响.此项技术适应于研究自然土壤结皮.
