据《韩非子·和氏》篇记载,春秋战国时期,楚国人卞和在楚山中觅获一块玉璞,恭敬地奉献给楚厉王。怎奈愚君把珍宝说成是一块普通的山石,以「欺君」之罪砍了卞和的左脚。武王即位时,卞和又跛着腿进宫献宝不料武王也不识宝,仍以「欺君」之罪砍掉卞和的右脚。文王即位以后,卞和抱玉跪哭于楚山下,整整哭了三天三夜,眼睛都哭出了血。文王得知,派人询问。卞和流着泪说:「我并不是为失去双足而悲伤,痛心的是,珍宝被人看作石头;贞洁的人背了个『说谎』的罪名。」文王令人琢其璞,果真得了一颗罕世的美玉,故命名为「和氏璧」。后这个无价之宝辗转馈赠,又传到了赵惠文王手里。秦昭王得知,愿拿十五座城池换取这块璧玉。由此又引出了「完璧归赵」、「负荆请罪」等动人的历史故
