北宋有一幅《校书图》,画一个学者一手持纸卷,一手拿着个小物件——看不清楚是簪子还是文具——在搔头发,仿佛踌躇不决。下首有个撞儿托盘送茶来。背景是《包公案》《施公案》插图中例有的,坐堂的官员背后的两折大屏风,上有朝服下缘的海涛图案。看上去他环境优裕。他校的书也许我们也不怎么想看。但是有点出人意表地,他赤着脚,地下两只鞋一正一反,显然是两脚互相搓抹着褪下来的,立刻使我想起南台湾两个老人脱了鞋坐在矮石墙上拉弦琴的照片,不禁悠然微笑。作为图画,这张画没有什么特色,脱鞋这小动作的意趣是文艺性的,极简单扼要地显示文艺的功用之一:让我们能接近否则无法接近的人。
