Although the application of rare earth elements in steel has not been widely promoted, but its role has been valued by all walks of life. Published literature recognized that rare earth cerium can significantly reduce the sulfur content of steel. Certain physical properties of steels have been improved after cerium addition, surface quality and processability have also been improved, but the reasons for these performance improvements have so far not been affirmed. The formation of sulfide inclusions, their shape, their composition and their distribution within the steel are probably one of the main reasons. The same effect of cerium and magnesium in cast iron, both to reduce the sulfur content, but also to promote graphite ball.
