我在编纂《上海出版志》的过程中,发现近代上海有一家日本人岸吟香办的乐善堂书局,首创铜版印书,印有《吟香阁丛书》等书,精美绝伦。可惜此技法已失传。 岸吟香,何许人也? 《中国近代出版史料二编》说,日人岸吟香在上海办有乐善堂书局、修文书馆、淞隐书屋等。 一九○○年,商务印书馆接盤日商修文印书馆,从此成为颇有规模的现代化铅印印刷厂。且也是我国印刷界使用纸型的开始。那么,修文印书馆是否就是岸吟香经营的修文书馆呢? 该书关于乐善堂书局的创办年月有两种说法,一说光绪十二年(1886年),一说光绪初年。究竟是哪年歇业呢? 查了布川角左卫门主编的(日本简明出版百科辞典》,知道岸吟香者,原来是岸田吟香,生于1833年4月8日,卒于1905年6月7日。是日本近代有名的报纸编辑和印刷厂厂长。可是仍然不能解决上面提出的几个问题。 近一二年内,我曾多次向日本朋友请教。感谢日本朋友的帮助,稻冈胜先生的面谈,石桥正子女士提供的岸田吟香的年表,矢作胜美教授百忙中就以上问题作了答复。现将矢作胜美先生的答复发表如下,希望国内外知情者进一步提供史料。 ——宋原放
