白莱,又名“小白菜”、“小油菜”、“油白菜”,俗称“青菜”。古时称“菘”。历史比粮食作物还要古远,栽培史可追溯到有史以前.我国新石器时期的西安半坡村遗址中就出土有白菜籽,证明距今约有六七千年了。将“菘”正式改名为白莱,是在宋代。据宋代苏颂考察说:“杨州有一种菘.叶圆而大,啖之无渣,绝胜他土者,此所谓白菜。”明代的《三才图会》中也说:“菘即白菜,南北皆有之。”
