塘大區現有基层社二十三個,其中工人消費社十一個,計有社員一五、一二○人;市民消費社十個,計有社員一七、四四八人;漁民供銷社一個,計有社員一、七一一人。另外還有一個做皮鞋的生產小組(九個人組成)社員共三四、二八八人,佔塘大區总人口(七九、九六五人)的百分之四十三點五(按應以勞動人口作比爲適)。社的大小類型大體可分爲四種:(一)大型社,社員由一千六百至二千以上者有六個;(二)較大的社,社員由八百至一千五百者有六社;(三)中型社,社員由四百至六百五十人者有五個社;(四)小型社,社員由一百五十至二百人者有五社。社員的股金各社規定也不一致,每股十斤米或十斤以上者有六社(主要是工廠社);八斤米者七社;四斤至五斤者有八社;一斤四兩者一社。
