In callus culture, the somatic embryo formed by a large number of indefinite embryoid bodies is a subject worth discussing for breeding large numbers of cytoplasmic male sterile lines in hybrid rice production. This is because the cytoplasmic male sterile line (A) stock is generally maintained by pollination with the nuclear holding line (B). In order to breed in large quantities, sterile and maintainer lines are usually planted with interlacing under segregating conditions. We successfully applied tissue culture techniques to proliferate 4 cytoplasmic male sterile lines with WA cytoplasm - V20A, Madhu A, IR48483A and IR46830A. The hulled sterile lines were seeded on N_6 media containing 2,4-D2 mg per liter to induce callus production. Within 3-4 weeks, 400-500 mg callus pieces are produced per seed embryo. Four-week-old embryogenic callus will be cultured and transferred to
