叙述“框架-人格”是布局叙述角度时首先落实的选择。“人称”其实是一个假象,第三人称叙述中,叙述者尽量将自己的存在遮蔽起来,以此构建一个自然叙述语流的“框架”(“隐形”叙述),而非实在可感的像人物一般的“人格”(“显身”叙述)。也就是说,所谓叙述人称之分类,实际上是在分析叙述者干预所述内容(显身/隐身)的程度问题。当隐身到一定的程度,就造成了“第三人称”的假象,反过来,显示到一定程度,甚至可成为参与故事的主人公,就成为叙述者兼主人公的第一人称。任何叙述,都在上述隐身“框架”与显身“人格”两端之间形成不同方位的叙述角度;而叙述角度反指叙述者的意向性,成为文本中指示文本价值取向的重要指示符。
