A team led by Honda Kenichi of the Institute of Industrial Science at the University of Tokyo has been researching new ways to produce hydrogen. They use a special catalyst when producing hydrogen from fresh water and carbon, hydrocarbons or other carbohydrate-containing substances. The catalyst consists mainly of titanium oxide, ruthenium oxide and platinum powder. The group’s latest test is to put 30 milliliters of water, 200 milligrams of carbon and 300 milligrams of catalyst into a flask and irradiate with a xenon lamp. Water is reduced to produce hydrogen.
