南阳素有“玉石之乡”的美称,采玉历史悠久。南阳县黄山出土的新石器时期文物证明,五、六千年前,古人就开始采用独玉了。“殷墟”出土的玉器中,亦不少是独玉。东汉张衡在《南都赋》中,对南阳玉作了淋漓尽致的描写。独山脚下“玉街寺”相传即为汉代加工、销售玉石的遗址。现今地表采坑,星罗棋布,可见历代开采之盛。目前独玉产量,名列前茅。独玉所雕刻的工艺品,色彩瑰丽,玲珑剔透,誉满海内。
