We have all worked with a man who works very well but has serious personality flaws that make it hard to get along with them and limit the effectiveness of his work, often leading to career failures. In the words of a senior executive whom we worked with, such a person is “a glorious achievement of 95% plus a 5% scourge.” We call this devastating pattern of behavior a “bad habit” There are some deep-rooted psychological defects. In other words, we do not use this term to describe the involuntary act of smoking, nor do we use it for those who intervene or bully our colleagues, fight self-doubt or force ourselves to work hard. There is no perfect man in the world. We are all trying our best to deal with some bad things and we will make mistakes. We use this term to talk about those employees whose mental constructs become problematic. Their “bad habits” are their personalities
