Philosophy of Childhood was first proposed by Columbia University professor Matthew Lipman at an annual American Philosophy meeting in the 1970s. He suggested that people who do philosophical work in the United States should regard childhood philosophy as an independent discipline that resembles religious philosophy, philosophy of science, philosophy of art, and philosophy of history, with a particular focus on childhood and related issues. But Lippmann himself did not put forward any substantive opinions on the disciplinary construction of childhood philosophy.
