徐悲鸿一生7次过星洲,其中4次只是途经,3次作了或长或短的停留。1939年至1941年为其最后、也是时间最长的一次,具体包括1939年1月9日至1939年11月18日的新加坡之旅、1939年11月18日至1940年12月13日的印度之旅和1940年12月13日至1942年1月6日的马来亚、新加坡之旅三个阶段。这3年,徐悲鸿正值44岁到47岁,精力充沛,艺术风格面貌成熟,远离国内战争和琐事纷扰,生活平和无忧,处处受拥戴,故能创作出大量作品,其中不乏《放下你的鞭子》《愚公移山》《泰戈尔像》《春山十骏图卷》等代表性作品,将之视为徐悲鸿艺术历程的高峰期亦不为过。
