This study assessed the annual blood transfusion costs in the UK during the 1994/1995 period. The analysis was based on publicly available data and information from interviews with NHS personnel and questionnaires from blood donors. In 1994/95, the British Blood Transfusion Agency used blood and blood products for transfusion costs of 165.5 million pounds. During this period, 2.75 million units of conventional whole blood and 144,000 units of apheresis and plasma were collected. 2.58 million units of red blood cells were delivered, approximately 866,000 red blood cell transfusions; 334,000 fresh frozen plasma and 1.16 million units of platelets were emitted; approximately 17,000 units of plasma were used for plasma transfusions and 188,000 units of platelets.
