Recurrent severe atrioventricular tachycardia, drug treatment is often ineffective. Such arrhythmias require the electrical separation of the atrial and ventricular conduction systems followed by artificial cardiac pacing to control the ventricular rate. There are many ways to cut off conductive systems such as chemical and mechanical disruption, surgical separation, artificial interventricular septal infarction, electrocoagulation, resection, septal dissection and septation, and intracardiac cryosection. Some of these methods are used in experiments and some in clinical practice.
