1928年,华北地区篮球赛在山西太原举行,引起各界关注,各大报社纷纷派记者前赴太原报道。各报社记者铆足了劲,都希望自己能够第一个将新闻发出去。当时,穷学生徐铸成是《大公报》的实习记者,他也被派往太原采访。许多大学参加了这场篮球比赛,各大学迫切希望知道比赛结果。获得篮球赛决赛权的南开学生更是兴奋,在决赛那天分成3队,分别守在《益世报》《庸报》和《大公报》3家报馆等候消息。
