对美育,不同时代的人们有过很多论述。18世纪德国启蒙运动时期,美学家在《审美教育书简》中指出:“从美的事物中找到美,这就是审美教育的任务。”在我国近代教育史上首创美育的蔡元培,则对美育作了这样的解释:“人人都有感情,而并非都有伟大而高尚的行为,这由于感情推动力的薄弱。要转弱为强,转薄为厚,有待于陶养。陶养的工具,为美的对象;陶养的作用,叫作美育。”
