Rowing has a long history in ancient Greeceand Rome,and it has its origins in navalbattles between these two ancient states.Inthose days victory in naval battles was predominatelydetermined by the oarsmen’s skill in handling theship,and thus highly trained oarsmen played a pivotalrole in sea warfare.However,training in rowing did not gain popularityuntil 1715.Rowing first appeared as a competitionsport in England in 1716,and handsome prizes weregiven to winning teams.During the heyday ofprofessional rowing competitions,it became a highlyattended spectator annual event on the Thames River.In 1829,the annual traditional rowing regattabetween the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford
