矩阵控制的显示是以xy方式控制的。所以用2n个输入信号就可以控制n~2个单元。这一点对于那怕只有中等分辨率的显示也是很有实际用途的。例如标准的525线电视系统就有超过250,000个负载信息的单元。矩阵控制的显示可分为两类:单稳显示系统和双稳显示系统。单稳显示系统的显示表面没有信息存贮。因此,显示表面上出现的信息必须以一定的帧速,周期性地不断刷新。这个帧速需高到足以避免闪烁并能保证相当的亮度。双稳显示的表面有存贮,因此要接通或断开一个单元,只需要给它一次信号,它就会保持在那个状态。所以除非是要改变数据内容,否则,出现在显示表面的信息就不必刷新。

Matrix control display can be divided into two categories: monostable display system and bistable display system. Monostable display system has no information storage surface.
