刘海粟为我国画坛开现代之风之巨擘,出生于常州春云坊,母为清代名儒、乾隆进士洪吉亮孙女,家学甚深。海粟先生自17岁(1912年)于沪上创上海美校,并逆时风而率先倡裸体模特写生,震动一时,为我国绘画基础训练引人西法人体写生而开先河。后数度旅欧学习、讲学,作品入选法国沙龙,并多次举办画展以弘扬中国文化精神。至建国后出任华东艺专校长,1957年身罹右派之冤与文革遭劫,仍作画不辍,以司马迁、苏东坡自励,至1979年耄耋高龄方焕发出艺术青春,阴霾尽扫,出任南京艺术学院院长。海老以其吐纳万象的博大艺术胸襟,将中国传统笔墨与西方现代色彩形式通过畅泻漫泅、絪緼多姿的画面韵意而至最高境界的完美结
