早在人类尚未产生语言的蒙昧时期,音乐就已经开始萌芽了。这是经过长期从事音乐起源研究的人们从人类学、民俗学、心理学、考古学和社会学等不同学科的研究中得出的结论。但这终究是一种推论。这是因为音乐是靠声音这种特殊的物质材料做为传播媒介并诉诸于情感的,它是流动的艺术,时间的艺术,它随时间流逝而消失的特性致使它在没有语言传授,没有文字记载的情况下而不能够保留下来。虽然到现在为止已有大量的考古出土的实物把音乐的起源不断地向前推进,但出土的都是音乐产生以后人类用以表现音乐的“工具”。
