West Germany’s library industry is as developed as its counterparts in industry and science and technology. Currently, there are over 19,000 libraries in the country, of which the Deutsche Library, founded in 1946, has become one of the most important libraries in the world today. These libraries can be divided into three types: public libraries whose main task is to popularize the knowledge of the national science and culture, with a focus on workers, handicapped people, the elderly and young people; university libraries, mainly for teaching and research services, 100, with a total of 76 million books; professional libraries, about 15,000, the main service targets scientific research units.
