甜菜自交系选育工作在生产和研究上表现出来的优越性是早已被人们所认识。美国甜菜育种工作中,基本是以选育具有特定抗性的二倍体自交系配制杂交种,以求获得较高的杂种优势,并且认为二倍体的杂种优势并不低于三倍体。法国德普雷教授在来我国考查中也提到,要首先对一较杂合品种进行3—4代的自交,形成具有各自特点的自交系,然后多系之间进行杂交,构成品种。瑞典的希林肖格公司培育的 Monohill 品种,
