When a selection of outstanding works was selected in the 1987 Chinese Style Piano Composition Creation and Performance Competition, it was found that creating outstanding Chinese style piano compositions remains a topic for composers to pursue. After the final entries were divided into two categories of small and medium-sized entries, the jury revealed the absence of first prize for medium-sized works. Chinese composer Zhao Xiaosheng’s “Tai Chi” won first prize for small works. Ding Shande, chairman of the Competition Jury, explained the vacancy in the first prize. He said the selection criteria are of three dimensions: style, musical image and performance skills, and require a combination of ethnicity and the sense of the times. Many works performed better or better at one or two points, but 12 Chinese and foreign critics
