根据国家急需,通过三年的找矿——勘探工作,在距离兴建的湖北玻璃厂仅约20余公里的武昌八分山、长山找到了储量大于300万吨的玻璃用石英砂岩矿,基本就近解决了湖北玻璃厂对硅质原料的需求。湖北省目前仅有一个汉阳新生平板玻璃厂,年产不过40万标箱,远远满足不了全省对玻璃的需要。国家拟在武昌建设一个年产180万标箱的平板玻璃厂(每年需硅质原料6万吨)。但当时由于本省尚未找到理想的矿山,便准备近期使用湖南石门县水浸垭石英砂岩矿。该矿到厂的铁路运距696公里,加上运费买一吨原(块)矿进厂价格高达20余元。
