Just weeks after the first Gigabit Ethernet standard was ratified, Intel Corp. and another network component maker formed a partnership a few days ago in preparation for a new, cheaper new specification for such high-speed networking technology. Intel and Level One Communications Inc. plans to produce Gigabit Ethernet-capable equipment on Category 5 copper cabling, which is far less expensive than fiber optic cable and is widely deployed in enterprise LANs. At the same time, they will also be involved in the IEEE 802.1ab working group, which is developing a copper-based standard. The two companies expect copper-based gigabit standards to be approved in March 1999. They may launch their product by this time. Intel’s head of network adapter manufacturing said Intel will go full-scale with the market, but they will ensure that their products will be compatible with standards-based
