The 1980s represented a decade of rapid expansion and drastic changes in the world’s direct investment. This is mainly: 1. The status of the United States and Britain has been declining. Japan and West Germany have been on the rise. Japan and West Germany have become the major suppliers of international investment. 2. Mutual investment among advanced countries is still the main pattern of direct investment in the world today. Investment flows to developing countries and regions have been hovering down since the record highs of the early 1980s, despite Japan’s rapid investment in Southeast Asia. 3. The high-tech industries in developed countries occupy an absolute predominance, and financial insurance, real estate and service industries are well received by international capitalists.
