The short-term instability of the oscillator frequency is characterized by several related parameters, either in the frequency domain (spectral density) or in the time domain (variance). This article describes various available measurement devices that experimentally determine these parameters. In the time domain, these measuring devices either use frequency conversion, either use frequency doubling, or use phase lock. In phase-locked frequency domain measurements, the advantages of discrete spectrum analysis are reiterated.
