Adrenal fasciculus and globular steroid hormone production is controlled by two different regulatory systems. Constitutive glucocorticoid secretion is mainly regulated by ACTH, globular secretion of aldosterone by angiotensin Ⅱ (AII), potassium and ACTH regulation. The mechanism of action of ACTH is cAMP-dependent, whereas the mechanism of action of AII and potassium is non-cAMP-dependent and correlates with extracellular calcium concentration.
