素有“白色奥运会”之称的冬季奥林匹克运动会,迄今已举办了18届。在1924年之前,冬奥会尚属“名不见经传”。经众多有识之士争取才获专门进行冰雪项目比赛的奥运会,最初的名称叫作“第8届奥林匹亚体育周”,于1924年1月25日至2月4日在法国的夏蒙尼举行,结果取得了意外的成功。夏蒙尼本是个在地图上也不易查到的小镇,由此也声名远播。4年之后,国际奥委会才正式将这次赛会命名为“第1届冬季奥运会”。
