晚清以来,中国社会发生了巨大的变化,鄂北的秘密社会也经历了由兴盛到分化、衰落、最终走向覆灭的过程。在各个阶段,中国社会的社会矛盾和主要任务不同,而秘密社会“反社会”的破坏性始终没变,使得他们的活动由具有一定积极、进步意义的反封建、反侵略性质,转而走向反国家、反人民。可以说,正是秘密社会自身“反社会”的实质,决定了其自身的命运。
