恩师李桂春先生生于1885年,艺名小达子,河北省霸州市辛章乡人。他13岁入永清县永胜和科班,学习河北梆子。出科后在天津与小香水、刘喜奎等名家合作演出河北梆子名剧《蝴蝶杯》,红遍了京、津两地。先生功底深厚、文武全才,改唱京剧后,文宗孙菊仙,武宗黄月山,并得到好友、著名黄派武生李吉瑞的指点。他演出的剧目非常之多,代表剧目有《凤凰山》、《独木关》、《刺巴杰》、《请宋灵》、《风波亭》、《莲花湖》、《剑峰山》、《恶虎村》、《八蜡庙》、《骆马湖》、《连环套》等。在《连环套》一剧中,他先演窦尔墩,后演黄天霸,非常成功。金少山到上海后,经常与李先生合演此剧,先生饰演黄天霸,金饰演窦尔墩。许多菊坛前辈名人都经常与先生合作演出。在《莲花湖》一剧中,先生饰演胜英,盖叫天饰演韩秀,从对打、“单刀”、“查拳”到其他表演的一招一式,干净利落,天衣无缝,每每博得观众满堂喝彩,为梨园界留下了一段佳话。
