在大白菜的育种和良种扩繁工作中,利用萌动种子低温春化理论,可以省去营养生长阶段而直接开花、结籽,有效地缩短了生育周期,加快了育种进程。人工春化处理大白菜种子,一般20天即可。种子虽然放置在0~6℃的低温条件下,却仍在缓慢的生长。到播种时,胚根一般长达15~25毫米,子叶比刚萌动时也增长了2~3倍,自身顶上能力基本丧失,对环境条件的适应能力也大为下降。此时若措施不当,必然会严重地影响成活率。笔者在多年的大白菜育种、良繁和科学实验工作中,积累了一些经验,使成活率由30.3~68.8%,提高到95.7%。
