一代文豪郭沫若,在谈论京剧《秦香莲》中包公怒铡陈世美一戏时说:这完全是一桩冤假错案。实际上,陈世美这个人物在历史上是个为人正派、品质优良、满腹经纶的书生。当年陈世美进京赶考,因家境贫寒,一路上依靠同乡资助才能进京考试得以高中的,但同乡名落孙山了。后来,同乡找陈世美想求个一官半职,其非分要求遭到陈世美的严词拒绝后,同乡怀恨在心,便编了一出戏诽谤陈世美。他们把戏由清代改到几百年前的宋朝,让包青天怒铡了陈世美。
