With the deepening of traffic engineering theory and testing methods, the traditional concepts of traffic, density and speed are gradually expanding. People’s understanding of these extended concepts is not the same, resulting in a lack of mutual comparability in quantitative terms for each individual’s conclusion in scientific research or practical application. This will undoubtedly bring inconvenience to the exchange of achievements and the practical effects will also be affected. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between different occasions, to make a scientific and unified definition of these extended basic concepts and to make a realistic expression of the basic relations between them. This article explores the definition of the average concept of these quantities.
