我家有一部旧本《老残游记》,因封面残缺,无以得知它的出版年代,与今本比较,它没有作者后人献出的后九回,从版式、印制与装帧风格来推测,该书应是民国初年亚东图书馆或艺文书房的版本。 那是在八十年代初,我偶然在旧书摊上见到它。它虽然旧,却平整、质朴而厚重,特别是书中配有线描的绣像插图,很有韵味。原书的封面已经缺损,代之以精心糊裱上去的牛皮纸,上面用工整、清丽的正楷毛笔字写了书名,并盖了藏书印。书中的脱页和残破之处都用透明玻璃纸仔细地帮衬、修补过。可以想象得出当年书主人对它的珍爱。我不是藏书家,也不懂得该书在版本学上的价值,况且家里已有新出的版本,但当时却对这本旧书怀有一种莫名其妙的偏爱。
