2006年7月16日至21日,中国中央军委副主席郭伯雄上将应时任美国国防部长的唐纳德·拉姆斯菲尔德的邀请,对美国进行了为期5天的正式访问。这是郭伯雄副主席首次访美,也是布什政府执政以来,中国军方对美国最高级别的访问。7月18日上午在五角大楼会谈期间,郭伯雄副主席向拉姆斯菲尔德赠送了1956年中国空军击落美国一架海军飞机情况报告的档案复制件。当拉姆斯菲尔德从郭伯雄副主席手上接过这份特别的礼物时,感到非常意外,连声惊叹。这是因为,他的密友詹姆斯·迪恩就是在这架海军飞机上被中国空军击落的。为此,早在2005年10月,拉姆斯菲尔德就利用访问北京的机会,向中方提出希望帮助寻找失踪好友迪恩下落的要求。中方高度重视,积极回应,进行了认真查找。中方提供的这份档案表明,这架飞机被击落后,机上没有人员生还。郭伯雄副主席亲自将这一特殊的档案复制件作为礼物馈赠给拉姆斯菲尔德,显示了中方的诚意。这令拉姆斯菲尔德非常感谢中方的用心和努力。
From July 16 to July 2006, Lieutenant General Guo Boxiong, vice chairman of the Chinese Central Military Commission, held an official visit to the United States for a period of five days at the invitation of Donald Rumsfeld, the U.S. Secretary of Defense. This is the first visit by U.S. Vice Chairman Guo Boxiong to the United States and the highest level of U.S. military visit to the United States since the Bush administration took power. On the morning of July 18, during the Pentagon meeting, Vice Chairman Guo Boxiong presented a copy of the archives of the Chinese Air Force shooting down a U.S. naval aircraft report in 1956 to Rumsfeld. When Rumsfeld took over this special gift from Vice-Chairman Guo Boxiong, he was very surprised and even marveled. This is because his close friend James Dean was shot down by the Chinese air force on the Navy aircraft. To this end, as early as October 2005, Rumsfeld took the opportunity to visit Beijing and offered China hope to help find the whereabouts of her missing friend Dean. China attaches great importance to and responded positively to carrying out a serious search. The file provided by the Chinese side shows that after the plane was shot down, no crew members survived the flight. Vice Chairman Guo Boxiong personally handed over this special file copy to Rumsfeld as a gift, showing China’s sincerity. This made Rumsfeld appreciate China’s hard work and dedication.
