Since the late 1970s, under the influence and promotion of the mainland’s policy of reform and opening up, the confrontation between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits has gradually eased and the economic and trade exchanges have been rapidly developed. In 1978, the re-export trade across the Taiwan Strait was only 47 million U.S. dollars from January to September 1992, reaching 5.28 billion U.S. dollars. It is estimated to be at least 7 billion U.S. dollars for the whole year, an increase of 147.9 times that of 1978 with an average annual growth rate of 42.9%.
