Professor E.schanda of Switzerland was invited to visit and give lectures on the glacier frozen lands in Lanzhou from May 8 to May 19, 1988. Professor E.schanda, former director of the Institute of Applied Physics at the University of Bern in Switzerland, is now retired. Prof. E.schanda has a wide range of interests in the field of remote sensing, especially in microwave remote sensing. The main contents of this lecture in LAN include the following aspects: 1. Passive Microwave Remote Sensing System: (1) Passive Microwave sensors, (2) basic measurements of terrestrial microwaves, and (3) microwave remote sensing of the atmospheric boundary layer. 2. The dielectric properties of ice and the microwave emission from snow.
