In order to rejuvenate the Japanese semiconductor industry, 11 semiconductor companies announced the formation of Advanced SOC Platform Corp. (Aspla). R & D, backed by government support, is a common groundwork for developing design and manufacturing technologies using 90 nm technology. Aspla’s chairman Satoru Ito said Aspla’s goal is to standardize designs and processes. Eleven companies are members of the executive committee of the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA). Among them, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Matsushita, NEC and Toshiba 6 companies, each invested 1.3 million US dollars and carry out the actual research and development work. The six companies will send 150 engineers to Aspla and pay about $ 85 million in operating costs. Aspla CEO Keiichi Kawate, formerly Toshiba Information Technology Executive, said: "The company’s 90 nm technology will be completely unified. The remaining five companies: OKI, Rohm, Sanyo, Sharp and Sony in support of the plan, each will provide 85,000 US dollars. Each of the six major investment firms invested another $ 1.3 million in Aspla in March 2003 to bring Aspla’s total
