The disposal of used car tires has become a global problem. In Greece, more than 50,000 tons of discarded tires are disposed of every year. This paper shows a series of experimental results obtained by partially replacing the sand in cement mortar with rubber tire particles. In addition to the physical and mechanical properties of these rubber blends, the experiment measured the chloride ion permeability of the mixture for the first time. Experimental results show that the mechanical properties of the mixture decreased, but the resistance to chloride ion penetration has been improved. This shows that cementitious base products and concrete obtained by partial replacement of sand with rubber particles can be used in the field where there is no strict requirement on mechanical properties but a high resistance to chloride ion penetration.
